Biophili.. what?!?

Biophili.. what?!?

Most of us still spend a large chunk of our lives in an office.

For some this is actually quite nice. Every day they walk into a workspace full of natural light, with high ceilings, lots plants, different textures, emotive colours and stimulating artwork. These space engage them and stimulate their creativity allowing them to produce some of the best work of their lives.

Unfortunately not all offices are like this with many of us still spending precious hours in mediocre spaces with no distinguishing features. Spaces that suck on our energy and drain the enthusiasm from our bodies.

With only 11% of us workers in Europe actively engaged and 27% of us actively disengaged* this is a big problem for businesses.

You can see the design our offices is so important. From the big decisions right down to the small obscure details, they all matter hugely in the fight for spaces that engage, stimulate and inspire brilliant work.

You’ve probably been hearing the word biophilic banded about as the answer to all our problems.
But what is it and what does it mean?

On the 13th of September Woodalls along with Nigel Oseland of Workplace Unlimited will be exploring why it’s become such a powerful tool for designers in the quest for office spaces that work better.

Join us to find out how:

Three offices that are cooler than yours.

Three offices that are cooler than yours.

Some people are happy to have mediocre offices. “Really?” we hear you ask. Not you. You want the coolest offices out there.

You want people to swoon when they walk in. You want your visitors to talk about coming for years. You want photos of it posted on every article about cool offices ever.

So here we have pulled out a couple of spaces that you may have seen with the reasons why we think they are some of the coolest spaces out there.

Bulletproof

Books for a reception desk? Check. Secret entrance to meeting room through the phone box? Check. Step out of the lift into a dark tunnel? Check. Let me in.

BTS

Full on trees? Check. Hammock? Check. One of the nicest social spaces around. A corridor that lets you experience the whole of London. Every type of workspace you could want. We want to work here.

Gravity Global

Graffiti? Check. Exposed ceilings? Check. Exposed raised floors? Check. Plus brilliant views across the coolest part of London and look at some of the spaces!

We love them.

The great thing about these spaces is that not only do they look great but they also work brilliantly. They foster innovation, they nurture communication. Most importantly they create culture, engagement and productivity.

They make it easier to hire the best people. They engage people with your brand. They make your clients want more.

Plus it’s fun.

Designing these spaces with people is brilliant fun, it’s a journey that delves into the depths of a company’s personality and engages all the creative madness you want. Nothing is too way out there. Nothing’s too crazy. Everything is possible.

Go on, let us make your office amazing.

Always cool,

Woodalls Design

Fast Track Office Fitouts Seminar – The keys and the killers.

Fast Track Office Fitouts Seminar – The keys and the killers.

2nd November 2017 Lunchtime Seminar

“This office fitout is so important that you must take whatever time is needed to plan it in detail” said no one ever. But sometimes it’s even worse than that. What about those times you have no time at all?

Sometimes you have no option but to do it super quickly. Those times that time just isn’t on your side. Those times that unfortunately, for whatever reason, you just have to have this one sorted by the end of the year and you’ve only just found out. And of course failure just can’t even be considered.

You feel good for a few moments as you realise the trust that is being put on you then the pressure comes crushing down.

Any office fitout project is a big juggling act between trying to cover off any risks and also achieve a result that will look as good and work as well as it could. Add time pressure into that equation as well and you really are in for a challenge.

The good news is that it is possible to do a brilliant fitout very quickly but when time just isn’t on your side you need a strong robust strategy.

Thanks to those who came along for this interesting session as we looked at how to manage a fast track projects and the pitfalls you must to avoid in order to achieve brilliant results.

Remember the one about the duck looking all calm but having to kick like crazy under the water?

Well you can look great and not lose any sleep.

Got a project that needs delivering quickly? Give us a call.

Noise. How much is your acoustic issue costing you?

Noise. How much is your acoustic issue costing you?

DODS Open Plan

The majority of UK office workers now work in an open plan environment, and with this rising trend comes some unique challenges. Open plan offices are often praised for their ability to promote collaboration and communication, reduce required space, and cut down on costs in terms of fit outs and other fees, but for exactly the same reasons they offer staff very little privacy during their working day and as such can be a major source of distractions.

With no way to cut your own workstation off from the noise of both other members of staff and the various pieces of office technology and personal devices that litter the office environment, concentration can be a struggle. A recent analysis conducted by office furniture manufacturer Steelcase has highlighted the severity of this issue, reporting that the average office worker is distracted every three minutes. To make matters worse, it can take them up to twenty-three minutes to return to a task when distracted.

Silence Therapeutics Boots   DODS Informal meeting

Research published last year by Oxford Economics also put emphasis on the issue, finding that more than half of office workers blame poor acoustic design for a reduction in productivity and happiness. On the other hand, another study of 13,000 people carried out by John Olson of BOSTI Associates found that those working in isolation, for example at home, are up to 56% more productive due to the lack of noise and distractions.

Do this make you worried about how much productivity you are losing because of noise? Speak to Woodalls acoustic team to find out how we have been integrating simple and effective acoustic strategies into our designs.

Seminar – All Change Please

Seminar – All Change Please

We were excited to welcome another excellent crowd to the latest seminar in our popular series – All Change Please – Hosted by Woodalls at The Shard on the 29th of June.

Deciding how much space to look for when you move can be one of the most difficult decisions. How can you tell how much space you will need and how you will be working in the future?

This is where office design steps in. Truly great office design solves problems, creates opportunities and makes life better for its users. ‘All Change Please’ focused on how an increasing interest in reducing overheads along with the changing expectations of the workforce is challenging space standards and changing the role of design. Great design will benefit your business today and help you achieve even bigger things in the future.

To do this businesses need to create a ‘new normal’, and Woodalls’ vision is to help businesses unlock the power in their spaces to allow their teams to become smarter, be more adaptable and more productive. To remain at the top of their game businesses need to work better today, challenge the status quo and redefine what’s possible tomorrow.

Thank you for those who joined us on the 29th of June for this exciting and informal seminar. This was much more than your standard event; we got to hear how companies are using the latest space standards in work scenarios and see real-life examples of businesses successfully using design to implement change and transform their businesses.

Thank you to all those who joined.
